Most of us think that bad habits are smoking, nail biting or eating unhealthily – we look at the physical actions. The ones that are hard to recognise are the ones that have been running in your life for a very long time.

Some examples are

  • Running late for work or meetings
  • Thinking negatively or focusing on negative
  • Gossiping
  • Seeking attention
  • Resisting change
  • Making rash decisions
  • Being defensive
  • Not finishing what you started
  • Not asking for help when you need it
  • Holding on to things that no longer serve you
  • Spending time with people that make you unhappy.

A bad habit can be changed in 30 days… You can trick your mind into changing a habit by focusing on one change consistently for 30 days. Habits are unconscious experiences from your past, which can be changed.

When you decide to break a bad habit, you have to trick your brain, by using very selective language when expressing your intention; for example you may be inclined to say “I am not going to eat unhealthy any more” what ever that habit may be, whether you bite your nails, smoke or sabotage your relationships. Statements like ‘I am not’, ‘I will not’ ‘I will stop’ or ‘I will quit’… will not benefit you, as the unconscious mind does not understand negative words, it speaks the language of pictures, hence the focus on the object not the language. If you focus on what you don’t want, the emphasis will be on the habit, creating more of that into your reality.

As a result, thinking about something that you need to give up only makes you want it even more; it makes it more attractive to you. This is why things become more attractive after they are forbidden.

Turn your focus and attention on the things that you do want, and your life will begin to transform. Start to make a list of all the things that you want in your life so to help you keep the focus on the things that you do want.

Therefore, it is more effective to, rather than attempt to quit something; you replace it with something else, a good habit, which will benefit you. With conscious daily efforts, in 30 days, you can replace a bad habit with a new (good) habit.

You will miss the magic in every day if you let your unconscious mind drive your decisions and control your life.

“Procrastination is the bad habit of putting off until the day after tomorrow what should have been done the day before yesterday”. Napoleon Hill
